さらばハイバリー
2006年05月02日こんにちはシーズン終盤に日本を飛び出しロンドンに来ました。目的はひとつ、ハイバリーでアーセナルの勇姿を目に焼き付けること。38419人収容のスタジアムも今シーズン限りで引退、93年の歴史にピリオドを打ちます。来季からは新装される６万人収容エミレーツ・スタジアムが彼らのホームになります。
欧州屈指の強豪クラブを目指す上で大きなキャパシティーのスタジアムは、予算確保を含めて必要不可欠です。今後、何十年か経過すればエミレーツ＝アーセナルと認識される時代が到来し、現在のマンチェスター・ユナイテッドやレアルマドリード、バルセロナに匹敵するようなビッグクラブに成長していれば、ホームスタジアム移転は成功と言えるでしょう。
さて、写真を紹介しましょう。ここはハイバリーのメインエントランスを入ったマーブルホール。選手を乗せたバスが到着し、彼らが入場していく関係者専用入場口です。このホールの白い壁に選手たちがハイバリーへのお別れメッセージを書き込んでいました。アンリやベルカンプはもちろん、かつてアーセナルに所属した稲本選手のサインも発見しました。「Thank you」「I love you」など思い思いのメッセージを書き込んであって、選手たちのハイバリーに対する愛着の深さを垣間見ることができました。
今季、このスタジアムでリーグ優勝を実現することは出来ませんでしたが、僕が観戦した試合のサポーターの声援は、他のどのクラブにも負けていませんでした。来季こそ･･･。
